ZIM Magazine 13 ZIM Antwerp Passes Under New York's Newly Elevated Bayonne Br idge Constructed in 1931 between New Jersey and NewYork, the historic Bayonne Bridge crosses the main sea lane that leads to some of the area's most important container terminals. The recent expansion of the Panama Canal allowed larger ships to pass through, but the Bayonne Bridge was limiting their passage into New York's ports. In light of this, authorities embarked on an approx. $800 million, large-scale bridge raising project to allow the passage of larger vessels.
