14 ZIM Magazine Follow us on Instagram ZIM Antwerp, with a capacity of 10,000 TEU, was the first ship of its size to pass under the newly elevated bridge on the way to Maher Terminals. The captain was given a commemorative plaque at a ceremony attended by representatives of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Maher Terminals, and ZIM USA. Maher Terminals' CEO, Gary Cross, remarked, "ZIM has been a loyal customer of Maher Terminals dating back to the opening of our first terminal in the early seventies. This event adds to the list of important milestones we share together in our long relationship. We are privileged to share this momentous occasion of the ZIMAntwerp calling at the Port of NY/NJ at our facility, passing under the newly raised roadway of the Bayonne Bridge. We applaud ZIM for their continued success and look forward to handling many more of their mega-vessels at Maher Terminals for many more years to come." The ZIM Antwerp set out on its voyage to the Port of New York from China, passing through the newly expanded Panama Canal on the way. The ZIM Antwerp sails the ZIM Container Service Pacific (ZCP), one of ZIM's flagship lines, which was recently upgraded as part of the company's newly-streamlined network. This is part of ZIM’s global strategy to operate as an independent carrier, focusing on trades where it has competitive advantages. As George Goldman, President of ZIM USA, explained: "ZIM is a significant player in this trade and one of the leading carriers serving the Asia-US East Coast trade, which is expected to continue to grow following the expansion of the Panama Canal. The trade is also served by another major ZIM service, the ZIM Seven Star Express (Z7S) along with additional complementary lines."
