The Theodor Herzl was built in Germany in 1957, as part of the reparations
agreements. It included fifty-seven first-class cabins and four luxurious suites.
All the cabins and public rooms were air-conditioned, including the two grand
halls. In addition to these halls, called “Herzl” and “Altneuland,” the ship offered
a number of bars, a swimming pool, a movie theater, and a synagogue. Its
maiden voyage included official receptions at a number of ports, accompanied
by enthusiastic media fanfare. The ship continued to serve Zim until 1969.
