Israelis regarded Zim with an innocence that reflected their way of life in the 1950s and 1960s. Nostalgic descriptions of the
era could not be complete without mentioning Zim’s ships and their sailors, who captivated the imagination of the Israeli
public. This may explain why the company’s ships were frequently featured in literature and popular culture. Zim’s staff,
for their part, recruited the period’s best artists of all kinds to work on the company’s marketing activities, resulting in quite
a few heartwarming mementos.

Naomi Shemer
Naomi Shemer composed a melody for Zim called “Shalom on the Waves,”
as part of the Shalom advertising campaign. In exchange, she received a
trip to France onboard the Shalom. Shemer’s daughter, Lali, later found a
letter in verse that her mother had written to her from the Shalom, in which
she demonstrated how much the voyage meant to her. In 2012, long after
Shemer’s death, the letter was published in a children’s book titled How the
Sun Shone for Me on the Shalom.
The lyrics to “Shalom on the Waves” were written by the famous Israeli poet,
Haim Hefer. He also traveled with Zim to the Caribbean and wrote poetry
about his experiences as a passenger.

In 1964, the movie Dalia and the Sailors, starring the Yarkon Bridge Trio, the Theater
Club Quartet, Shaike Ophir, and others, was filmed on Zim’s cargo ship Netanya.
The film was considered controversial, due to a risqué scene with partial nudity.
