Zim began sending ships to West Africa as early as 1951, primarily to import timber. This
relationship with Africa developed quickly and gained a new level of importance when
Ghanaian President Kwame Nkrumah asked Zim to become a partner in developing a
national Ghanaian shipping company, based on Zim’s model. The result of this fruitful
partnership was the Black Star Line.
Zim representatives founded a thriving commercial network in Africa. Soon, the company
would send more representatives to other parts of the continent, including South Africa
and Kenya.
