Launching Ceremonies
The Zim America, the first of a series of ships built at the HDW shipyard, was greeted
with a gala event upon its arrival at its home port in Haifa in 1990. The grand event
was attended by hundreds of invited guests, including the President of Israel and
all the Zim employees in the country.
Six additional third-generation container service ships soon joined the America, each
with a 2,400 container capacity. In 1995, the service transported 232,000 containers
and in 1996 the move to “Fixed-Schedule Weekly Service” was completed, bringing
ships to each port on the same day each week, providing a new level of convenience
and reliability for importers and exporters. The next generation of Zim container ships,
HDW 2, was delivered in 1996-1997 and had a carrying capacity of 3,400 containers.
