In October of that year, the Eilat, which
had also recently joined Zim and was
displaying the company’s seven stars,
anchored in the port of Benghazi, Libya,
to pick up the city’s Jewish community.
The mission was conducted in secrecy
for fear of opposition from the authorities
and violence from local mobs. The crews
were prepared to cut the ship’s ropes if
necessary, to quickly escape to sea in case
of attack.
