With the help of a Cypriot ally, the ship agent Prodromos Papavassiliou, the ships were
kept in good working condition by their captains, Captain Gad Hilb and Captain Yitzhak
“Ike” Aharonovich, formerly commander of the famous Exodus (see page 23). On the day
the State of Israel was declared, the captains raised the flag and the “Pans” immediately
became known as Zim ships, renamed the Azmaut andKomemiut. Many of the immigrants
freed from the camps in Cyprus would return to Israel on the newly named ships.

The illegal immigration operations reached their peak in the months leading up to Israel’s
independence. In 1947, the British fleet rerouted the two largest immigrant ships, the Pan
York and the Pan Crescent, to Cyprus. The refugees and would-be immigrants were placed
in internment camps while the ship’s crews remained on deck and kept the ships seaworthy.
