As Israel’s War of Independence raged, the “distinguished ladies” of Zim – a collection
of rickety, obsolete ships – continued to bring thousands of new immigrants to the
reborn country. Negbah, Zim’s second ship, entered service in the middle of the War of
Independence. Zim decided to name this new ship in honor of Kibbutz Negbah, founded
by the Shomer Hatzair youth movement, which was fighting to defend the Negev region
from Egyptian invasion. On the Negbah’s first voyage from Europe, it brought five hundred
refugees from the Apeldoorn DP camp in the Netherlands. The refugees, all children, had
come from all over Europe.

Galilah – Zim’s third passenger ship, joined the small fleet in September of 1948. The
old ship was built in 1913 and had spent WWII as a troop transporter for the US army.
