cargo was on time, the ship was on time but the customer
had forgotten to submit certain documents to ZIM which
were essential to prepare the bill of lading. The cargo was
rolled, or pushed back two more weeks to another ship
that would call Los Angles; Los Angles is called on the ZCP
Service once every two weeks.
Some additional issues that had to be dealt with were that
the terminal wanted to load the cargo from bow to stern
(front of vessel to rear of the vessel), this would cause the
cargo to maybe hang over the stern (rear) of the vessel. As
is usual practice, ZIM wanted to load at hwart ship (side to
side). The Operations team in Halifax had to work with the
terminal to get the cargo loaded the way that was in ZIM’s
best interest and that would be to load at hwart ship. This
requirement would mean the terminal would have to rent
additional lifting equipment to make this possible. After all
was said and done, the cargo was loaded on the container
ship at hwart ship.
Another major stumbling block to overcome was the cradle
that was sent to the terminal by the customer was too small
and would not adequately support the cargo during the transit
to Los Angles on the sea voyage. The cargo had to be rolled
another two weeks because the cradle had to be modified.
The Operations department both in Halifax and in Norfolk
followed this development and keeping an eye on how this
new development would be dealt with by the customer and
the terminal. The customer decided to keep the cradle and
requested the terminal to make the necessary modifications
to the cradle to meet the demands of an ocean voyage. This
was done under the watchful eyes of the Halifax Operation
team with Norfolk’s Operations kept updated.
Once it was determined that the cradle was ready and it
met the demands required, the booking was rolled over to
the ZIM San Francisco. Upon arriving at the terminal the
ship strarted working and the fishing vessel was loaded,
at hwart ship, behind the house on the stern (rear) of the
vessel. It took about two months from the time of booking
to the time of loading on board the vessel.
The team here in A3 did another wonderful
job and came together as you would
expect from a top notch team, working
together to identify problems and finding
solutions to those problems; trying to stay
ahead of any and all issues. It would have
been easy from the start to simply say that
it was too difficult to move this piece and
turn the cargo away but that is not how
we conduct business here at ZIM.
