The Indian cargo ship Damodar Tasaka was among the first to reach the survivors. Its
captain and crew demonstrated exceptional resourcefulness and courage, earning praise
for their lifesaving actions, performed under nearly impossible conditions.
“He risked his ship and crew to approach us and literally, brought the bow of his ship within
1 meter of the boat. With extraordinary maneuvering, the ship again approached us. We
were next to the side of the ship…the Indian sailors wrapped us in blankets…we received
devoted, warm, heartfelt care and no words can express my appreciation and gratitude.”

The container ship Zim California experienced more than its share of adventure, drama, ‫סרקו את הקוד‬
and even tragedy at sea. In 1978, the crew fought a fire which erupted in its engine Scan for video
room in the middle of the Atlantic. In 1984 the ship was seriously damaged in Taiwan.
In October 1985, two seamen, Yaakov Abu and Zion Abu, were murdered by terrorists
while on shore leave in Barcelona.
