Offering assistance to any vessel in distress is a sacred part of the naval tradition. In 1952,
Zim’s first ship, Kedmah, rushed to the aid of the French passenger ship Champollion,
which ran aground on a sandbank near Beirut and sank. Kedmah rescued 186 passengers
and crewmen from certain death. This was just the beginning of a long tradition that has
continued throughout Zim’s history.

• 1957: In the open sea, the Zion picked up a sailor with a serious eye injury from El
Yam’s tanker Yam Suf.

• June 12, 1957: The Norwegian ship William requested help for a sailor in serious
condition. The passenger ship Israel, under the command of Captain Jacobsen, changed
course and brought the patient on board for medical treatment.

• 1958: A lifesaving mission aboard Zim’s Zion. Captain Ben Berkovitz maneuvered his
ship in stormy seas to bring aboard injured patients from a Liberian ship and a Greek ship.

• 1959: En route from Rotterdam to Hamburg, the Etrog noticed the German ship Bussard
on fire in the middle of the sea. Under the command of Captain Achihu Zeiman, the Etrog
rescued all of the Bussard’s sailors.

• January 1961: In a dramatic sea 360 miles southeast of Puerto Rico, the Dagan saved
29 sailors from the Greek tanker Kissavos, which sank following an explosion.
