Used batteries in a DV Container

Used batteries filled with acid (car batteries) should be drained (dried) before being packed for the shipment.

1. For used batteries containing acid (wet):

1.1. If there is no local facility at Export Country to process/neutralize the batteries' acid, used batteries containing acid (wet) may be accepted on a case by case basis, provided the Customer agrees to properly prepare the Cargo and containers according to special instructions in order to reduce the risk of leakage, and to send in advance for each shipment stuffing photos and the container's number.

1.2. The Customer's shipments will be randomly checked in order to verify compliance with the below instructions. Non-compliance with the instructions may result in rejection of future shipments.

1.3. Used batteries containing acid (wet) are usually considered as DG Waste.

1.4. Shipment is under Prepaid terms.

2. Packing Instructions for dried/wet batteries:

2.1. Battery terminals must be properly covered by proper insolating tape/caps in order to prevent the chance of electrical circuit and fire.

2.2. Battery terminals should be facing away from each other.

2.3. Batteries should be completely drained from acid.

2.4. Batteries should be stuffed on pallets. Bulk stuffing of used batteries is forbidden.

2.5. Container floor should be covered with nylon/plastic lining.

2.6. Damaged batteries should be inserted into proper plastic bags and stacked in the middle of the top layer of the pallet.

2.7. Batteries should not be stacked more than 3 layers high (a 4th layer may be permitted by the Head Office Special Cargo Division on a case by case basis). A piece of cardboard must be placed between each layer and on the top layer.

2.8. After loading the 3rd layer, honeycomb cardboard should be placed on top. The stack should be shrink wrapped tightly 5 times around overlapping bottom layers, making sure to catch the top layer and help anchor load.
