ZIM’s first annual Sustainability Report reflects a longstanding, ongoing organizational effort, stretching over many years, to position ZIM as a sustainability frontrunner.
While this report focuses on all aspects of sustainability, from corporate governance to community relations, a key section is dedicated to ZIM’s environmental efforts as a vessel operator on a global scale.
As we face new global challenges and new regulatory demands, our task is to double our efforts towards sustainability in every field of our activity. ZIM’s Sustainability Report is a testament to our ongoing efforts and a roadmap to future challenges and accomplishments.
Health, Safety & Quality Assurance
ZIM is committed to maintaining the highest standards of health, safety, and quality on behalf of our customers and employees, as well as for the sake of the greater community and the environment as a whole.
At ZIM, we view our job as part of a wider social responsibility to better our world. This vision begins at home, with our uncompromising approach to occupational health and safety, and continues as we embrace high environmental standards and community projects that are creating a positive impact across the globe.
All working conditions fully adhere to local and international laws and regulations. Health and safety risk assessments are conducted on a regular basis, in addition to training sessions, and employees are frequently updated regarding any new incidents
Safety on the job is our highest priority. This is why all of ZIM's operational activities adhere to the highest standards of maritime safety, and all our vessels comply with International Safety Management regulations.
Work at sea and in ports can entail unique risks. Our employees are highly trained to work safely in these environments, and their skills are continuously refreshed and updated through regular briefings and training sessions.
We rigorously monitor compliance levels and accident frequency rates to ensure our employees stay safe.
ZIM is also C-TPAT certified by US Customs & Borders Protection, testifying to ZIM's effective procedures designed to determine and alleviate risk throughout the shipping process.

Personal & Professional Development – Structured Social Dialogue
ZIM conducts regular employee assessments (at least once a year) designed to evaluate each staff member's performance, both individually and as part of a team. These assessments enable us to set individual development goals and establish a career plan for the employee's continued development. Our general policy is to prioritize internal recruitment whenever possible.
Cargo Incident Notification System (CINS)
Launched in September 2011, CINS is a shipping lines initiative designed to increase supply chain safety, reduce the number of cargo incidents onboard ships, and highlight the risks caused by certain cargoes and/or packing failures. Membership of CINS comprises the majority of the world’s container slot capacity, and ZIM has been a CINS member since 2012.
CINS permits analysis of operational information related to all cargo and container incidents which lead to: injury or loss of life, loss or serious damage of assets, and environmental concerns. Data relating to any cargo incident on-board a ship is uploaded to the CINS database, where it can then be accessed and used to prevent future issues.
ZIM has Hazardous and Dangerous Goods and Chemicals (DG) Centers operating at its head offices and regional offices. These centers check and approve each DG shipment, prior to loading on our vessels. All teams are regularly trained in accordance with IMO/IMDG code requirements, in addition to local laws and regulations.
Our primary safety target is: zero fatality records. Indeed, during recent years, no fatal accidents recorded.
Serving & Supporting the Community
ZIM has a strong, long-standing commitment to the communities in which we operate. Our staff places a high priority in getting involved with many aspects of communal life. One example is an innovative daily after-school program for at-risk children, which provides a surrogate home environment, hot meals, and homework assistance for children aged 6 to 11. ZIM is proud to contribute financially to this important program, in addition to the time and energy our staff devote as regular volunteers.
ZIM works in communities worldwide to support social initiatives such as these, where they are needed most.
